My doc used some sort of laser thing to burn make the split in the vas deferens. Smelled like burning hair. That was the worst part.

I had one completed shortly after our third child. Not a big deal at all. I didn't even use a razor to shave my balls. Just trimmed them down, the doc did a small amount of shaving and went to town. I actually over did it too soon and my soreness lasted about a week, so definitely lay low for at least 2 days. My wife struggles when taking contraceptives' as it messes with her mood and hormones like crazy so the vasectomy was the best option for our family. Also, the alternative of her having a much more involved procedure was not an option for birth control.

I had a Vaz when I was 45 years old. I had recently been divorced and I certainly didn't want to father anymore children and I wanted to be the one to make sure that didn't happen. It gave me a true sense of freedom, it wasn't that painful and my then lover and I made love the night of the procedure. I was told not have have sex for a week but we were over excited about the fact that she couldn't get pregnant and jumped right in. No ill affects. 4 years later I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I opted for a radical prostatectomy to remove the gland. That was a rock solid guarantee that fatherhood would never happen to me again (I've always been amazed at the number of guys who have no clue what a prostate gland does). In the years that followed, my lovers and then my second wife had a true sense of freedom when making love and that made it more enjoyable than ever for them and me as a result of that. They could really let loose not having any worry that they could become pregnant. So, a Vaz is a wonderful option for guys filled with positive benefit. Thanks for this article, Wes, and its' openness on a sensitive subject.

I should probably acknowledge that a person who can afford a vasectomy, even with the help of insurance, can also probably afford travel to a free state in order to obtain a safe abortion. However, this is in no way intended to draw any comparisons between a simple, pre-planned procedure, and the trauma, long term health consequences, and now potential legal implications involved in an abortion.

Surprised the shaving is the scariest sounding part…

More seriously, how did the discussion with your wife go down?

My doctor told me that they do them in the train station in China. He did a procedure that was very quick. He described it as the impact of a rubber band snapping against your scrotum, and that's about all it was. His post-procedure instructions told you what you would feel each day for the week after and they were spot on. Good stuff

Any thoughts on the potential provided by RAR-α inhibitors for make birth control pill? It definitely wasn't an option back when you got your vasectomy, but we could be few years out from effective non hormonal male birth control pills... What would be the factors you'd look at between vasectomy and a non hormonal male birth control pill?

Did they check to make sure it "took"? For mine, I had to bring a sample a few weeks later to make sure that everything was in non-working order.

Isn’t taking a pill a day a little bit easier (in normal circumstances, don’t start telling me about women with hormones disorders or rare cases)? I mean, if that would be possible for men, I’d do it, but this relatively easy produce is irreversible. Wanting to have kids, is not. Is there a reversible option for men other than condoms?
