The Best Off-Road Route And Camping Destination In Baja
And how you can do it well without driving all the way down there
Here’s the first article I’m going to put behind a paywall as part of this new project. Contained in it are GPS coordinates and tracks, plus effective, actionable guidance that should add up to every piece of knowledge you need to plan your own seriously epic, very affordable, and remarkably safe adventure in Mexico.
I did this route for the first time early this year, during the first two-week camping portion of me and Virginia’s three-month trip to Baja. Before going I asked every experienced racer, traveler, and actual Mexican I knew, and only came up with a single person who had any experience with it all, which was scouting it by air, rather than anything on the ground. I also asked every single bartender we chatted with and friend we made or knew in Todos Santos if they had ever been. No one had. And that’s a shame, because this is probably the single most scenic and enjoyable drive I’ve done anywhere in the world, along with the most idyllic camping.
Below, I’m going to explain the route, how to get there, where to get gas, what you need to bring to best enjoy it and in case something goes wrong, where to camp, and who to drink a beer with. And give you two ways you can do it without driving all the way down to Baja Sur (which you should still absolutely do). You will be able to take this information and plan a trip immediately, or put this on your bucket list. And remember, I’m available to my subscribers for anything from simple questions all the way up to handholding. I want you guys to go do this, and enjoy the hell out of it, just like we did.
