In the world of daily newspapers, outlets would print "matchers" of stories that were "broken" by competitors.

Yes, though once a broken story became public knowledge it kinda entered the public domain. The worst, of course, are press releases cut and pasted as "news"... er, "advertorial." Sadly I know of which I speak. Some days you're witty and informative. Some says you kinda phone it in.
